I used to think that special moments had to be something big. A holiday, a celebration, a beautiful dinner somewhere or an exciting plan to look forward to. But over the years, I have realised that most of our life is actually made up of completely ordinary days.
We wake up, go to work, make dinner, clean our homes, meet friends, drink our morning coffee and repeat it all again the next day.
And I think this is exactly why learning how to make everyday life feel special is so important.
I have become much more intentional about appreciating small things as I have gotten older. It does not mean that every day is perfect or exciting — definitely not! But there are little things I do that make an ordinary Tuesday evening or a quiet Sunday morning feel just a little bit nicer.
Here are 10 small things that make everyday life feel special for me.
1. I Always Have Flowers Somewhere in My Home
If you have read my other articles, you probably already know how much I love flowers.
Fresh flowers are one of those little luxuries that instantly change the atmosphere of my home. I don’t think they need to be expensive either. I am perfectly happy with a simple supermarket bouquet, flowers from the garden or whatever happens to be in season.
There is something about walking into a room and seeing flowers on the table that makes the whole space feel more alive and cared for.
I think we sometimes save beautiful things for special occasions. The nice plates, the candles, the flowers. But why? An ordinary Wednesday deserves some beauty too.
This is something I also talked about in my article 10 Everyday Habits That Make My Home Feel Calm because flowers are such a simple part of creating that cozy feeling at home.

2. I Make Something Homemade
There is something incredibly comforting about making food from scratch.
It doesn’t need to be anything complicated. Sometimes it is dinner, sometimes a cake and sometimes — like in this picture — homemade cinnamon buns.
I love the whole process. Preparing everything, waiting for it to bake and having that amazing smell around the house. And, of course, sitting down afterwards and actually enjoying what I made.
Homemade food makes an ordinary evening feel like a little occasion to me.
It is also one of the reasons why I love keeping family recipes. Some of the recipes I make were passed down from my grandmother, and I think there is something very special about continuing these little traditions.

3. I Dress Nicely Even When I Don’t Have Big Plans
I used to think that my nicest clothes should be saved for an occasion.
Now I don’t really believe in that anymore.
Sometimes the occasion is simply Saturday.
The outfit in this picture was from a very normal Saturday evening. I didn’t have any particularly exciting plans — just meeting friends for coffee. But getting ready, putting on an outfit I liked, doing my hair and adding a few accessories immediately lifted my mood.
I think clothes have a bigger effect on how we feel than we sometimes realise.
You don’t need a special event to wear the dress, your favourite earrings or the scarf you love. If something makes you feel good, wear it.
This is very similar to the way I approach my wardrobe in How I Make Simple Outfits Look More Interesting. I prefer simple clothes and then use accessories and small details to make them feel like me.

4. I Make My Morning Coffee a Little Ritual
Coffee is probably one of the most ordinary parts of my day.
But it is also one of my favourites.
Especially during winter, when it is cold and dark outside, I really appreciate those few quiet minutes with a warm coffee in my hands.
I don’t like starting every morning by immediately looking at my phone and rushing into everything I need to do. Of course, some mornings are like that — real life happens! But whenever possible, I try to actually enjoy my coffee.
I sit by the window, look outside and give myself a few minutes before the day properly starts.
It sounds incredibly simple, but I think that is exactly the point.
5. I Use the Things I Love
One thing I am trying to get better at is actually using beautiful things rather than keeping them for later.
The nice cup.
The beautiful plate.
The perfume I love.
The expensive candle.
The dress that feels slightly too nice for an ordinary dinner.
There is always a temptation to save things because we don’t want to waste them. But eventually I realised that keeping something hidden in a cupboard for years is probably a bigger waste.
I would rather enjoy the things I already own.
This mindset has also helped me buy less because I appreciate what I have much more. I wrote more about this in 10 Things I Stopped Buying That Made Life Simpler.
6. I Give Myself Something Small to Look Forward To
I don’t think we need a holiday booked every month to have something exciting ahead.
Sometimes my plans are very small.
A coffee with a friend after work. Cooking something nice on Friday. Going to the gym. Buying flowers. Watching a film in the evening. Visiting my family. Going for a walk somewhere beautiful.
Having these little things in my calendar makes a surprisingly big difference to me.
Life cannot constantly be exciting, and I actually don’t think I would want it to be. But having something small to look forward to makes an ordinary week feel much nicer.
7. I Try to Make My Evenings Slower
I have become much more protective of my evenings over the years.
There was a time when I could spend hours on my phone without even realising it. Then suddenly the evening was gone and I didn’t feel like I had actually rested.
Now I really enjoy slower evenings.
I might make tea, light a candle, cook something, read, listen to music or simply prepare everything for the next morning.
It is not a strict routine and I don’t manage it perfectly every day. But I have noticed that when my evening is calmer, the following morning usually feels calmer too.
This is another habit that has become a big part of the way I create a peaceful home, which I talk about more in 10 Everyday Habits That Make My Home Feel Calm.
8. I Add Small Signs of Life Around My Home
Flowers are not the only natural things I love having around my home.
I also really enjoy plants.
My orchid is a perfect example. It is such a simple thing, but when it flowers, I notice it every time I walk past.
Plants make a home feel lived in. They require a little bit of attention and care, but I think that is part of their charm.
For me, a cosy home is not about having lots of decorations everywhere. I actually prefer keeping my spaces quite simple. Instead, I like having a few things that bring warmth and personality — plants, flowers, candles, photographs and pieces that actually mean something to me.

9. I Notice the Season I Am In
I think modern life makes it surprisingly easy to stop noticing the seasons.
We spend so much time indoors, looking at screens and following the same routines throughout the year.
But I really enjoy allowing my routines to change slightly depending on the season.
Winter means candles, warm drinks, cosy evenings and slower weekends.
Spring makes me want fresh flowers and open windows.
Summer is for long evenings outside, travelling and lighter meals.
Autumn makes me want to cook more and make the house feel cosy again.
Instead of constantly wishing for the next season, I try to find something I enjoy about the one I am currently living in.
10. I Invite People Over Without Trying to Make Everything Perfect
This is probably one of my favourite ones.
When friends come over, I don’t think everything needs to look like a perfectly styled dinner party.
The picture here is from a simple visit when two friends came over. I put some snacks on the table — cheese, vegetables, grapes, crackers, dips and a few other things — and that was enough.
Nothing particularly complicated.
But I remember the afternoon.
And that is the important part.
I think sometimes we put ourselves off inviting people into our homes because we think we need to clean everything perfectly, cook an impressive meal or create some beautiful table setting.
Most people really don’t care.
They came to see you.
Some of my favourite memories are from completely ordinary evenings around a table, eating simple food and talking for hours.

Making Everyday Life Feel Special Doesn’t Have to Cost Much
When I look at this list, something really stands out to me.
Almost none of these things are expensive.
A coffee by the window. Homemade cinnamon buns. Flowers from the supermarket. Wearing clothes I already own. Lighting a candle. Looking after a plant. Inviting friends over for some simple food.
They are tiny choices.
I think we are sometimes encouraged to believe that enjoying life means constantly buying something new, travelling somewhere beautiful or planning the next exciting experience. And of course, I love travelling and special occasions too.
But those moments are only a very small percentage of our lives.
Most of life happens in between them.
It happens on Monday mornings, quiet evenings after work, winter afternoons, trips to the supermarket and Saturdays when you don’t really have any plans.
Over the years, I have realized that I don’t want to spend those days simply waiting for something more exciting to happen.
I want to enjoy them too.
And maybe that is the real secret to making everyday life feel special, not creating a completely different life, but noticing the lovely little things that are already part of the one you have.
